26 Mar New Driver Number Requirement for Your Car Insurance Cover

A change to the Road Traffic Act 2023 comes into effect on 31st March 2025. To enhance road safety, the government now requires drivers to provide their driver number, along with the driver numbers of anyone named on their policy, when purchasing or renewing car insurance.

This new regulation aims to improve the accuracy of the Motor Insurance Database, which is updated daily. A more effective database will help the Gardaí quickly identify uninsured drivers and vehicles.

Important Information – Policy Renewal

When renewing your policy, you will need to provide your broker with your driver number and the driver numbers for all drivers you would like covered on your car insurance policy. We recommend you check your licence and locate where the driver number is located, so you can provide it for your next renewal.
If you provide your driver number but not that of your named driver(s), we will only be able to renew the policy for you and will be required to remove the named driver(s) from your policy.

Driver Number

You can find your driver number under section 4(d) on your driving licence. See the image below (driver number highlighted in red). You will need to supply this to your broker when renewing your car insurance or purchasing a new policy

Important Changes Impacting You:

From 31st March 2025, Ivernia Insurance Ltd can only provide car insurance if all drivers on the policy have a valid driver number. This applies to both new policies and renewals starting from that date.

Renewing or Replacing a Lost Driving Licence

It is really important for customers to check their licence is valid and up to date for both the policyholder, and any named driver, who require coverage on a car insurance policy.
